Customs have invoked the COFEPOSA Act against two prime accused in the Kerala gold smuggling case.The Kerala gold smuggling case is being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and the Customs Department. So far, NIA has charged 30 people in connection with the case. Further investigation in the case has continued.

The gold was smuggled via a diplomatic channel, which arrived from UAE and was confiscated by the Customs authorities in Thiruvananthapuram.

The Customs Department had initiated actions under COFEPOSA Act against Sandeep Nair and Swapna Suresh, the key accused in the diplomatic baggage gold smuggling case on October 10, 2020. The investigating team had found that the accused had been involved in smuggling on multiple occasions.

The National Advisory Board of the COFEPOSA is set to review the detention of the above two people arrested under the said act.
