One in seven Indians is affected by mental disorders of different severity, which includes depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorders.The contribution of mental disorders to the total disease burden in India has doubled between 1990 and 2017. A study by 'The Lancet Psychiatry showed that a major portion of the Indian population suffered from mental disorders of various severities. Depression and anxiety were the most common mental disorders, with 45.7 million having depression and 44.9 million suffering from anxiety disorders, of the 197.3 million Indians suffering from mental disorders, as per the latest results in 2017. This accounts for roughly one-seventh of the country's total population.

A Professor at the Psychiatry Department, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, said that mental health is increasingly being recognized as one of the priority areas in health policies globally and has also been included in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Dr. Rajesh Sagar, professor, psychiatry department at the AIIMS, Delhi, said that about 14.5% of the country's population was suffering from mental illness, of which just about 10% are able to get enough treatment largely due to negligence as mental illness is still not considered a serious illness.
