The U.S. historical highlights published by the official History, Art and Archives website and a BBC news article confirm the claim.According to the government website of History, Art and Archives, former U.S President Woodrow Wilson introduced a National Prohibition Act called The Volstead Act on May 27, 1919 banning alcohol and drugs to improve public morals and save peoples' lives.

However, there were many who disliked the Prohibition, and thought the government was interfering too much in their lives of. As a result, thousands of people were drinking illegally at places called speakeasies across the U.S. To discourage drinking, the government added alcohol to industrial alcohol. The poison was often stolen and resold for drinking, having fatal consequences.
