Tamil Nadu government has withheld the revised property tax and has rolled back to the old rates.The government has decided to withhold its July 2018 order on the property tax hike, which was in effect since April 1, 2018. The municipal administration minister S P VelumaniIt said that the govt had constituted a committee to examine representations from various quarters on the revised property tax rates. Further, it has been decided that the new rates will be withheld until the committee submits its report, and a final decision is taken.
The revised property rates for residential and for commercial buildings were too steep and went up to four-fold. The move was opposed by various residential welfare organizations, which claimed they had to pay exorbitant taxes.
