News by The Intercept and The Verge supports that TikTok instructed moderators to suppress posts by ugly people and the poor to attract new users.The Intercept on 16 March 2020, stated that according to the guidelines obtained, the TikTok video-sharing app instructed their moderators to suppress posts of ugly, poor, or disabled for the platform and were also told to censor political speeches in TikTok live streams, punishing those who harmed national honour or broadcast streams about the state departments such as police with bans from the platform.

The Verge quoting the TikTok spokesperson that the guidelines obtained by The Intercept are only for some of the regional area and it's not for the United States region. The company has made many of these changes over the past year.
