Gujarat, renamed dragon fruit as its name, is associated with China.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced that the dragon fruit would be renamed 'Kamalam,' Sanskrit name for the lotus.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced that the dragon fruit would be renamed 'Kamalam,' Sanskrit name for the lotus. On January 20, 2021, Rupani said the step was taken as the name 'Dragon fruit' is associated with China. Since the fruit's outer part is shaped like a lotus the name 'Kamalam' suits the fruit. Rupani added that the state government has applied for the patent for renaming the fruit imported from South America, which is now grown in several states in the country. This fruit is primarily cultivated in Kutch, Navsari, and different parts of Saurashtra in Gujarat.

The symbol of the ruling BJP party is Lotus and Kamalam is also the name of the BJP's office in Gujarat.

The announcement of renaming the fruit has drawn mixed responses and reactions on social media.
