The I-League's Kolkata derby came to an end after Mohun Bagan's Syed Rahim Nabi got injured by a stone thrown by the team's supporters in 2012. On Dec. 9, 2019, violence covered the huge Yuva Bharati Krirangan, forcing the marquee I-League clash between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal to be called off. The violence left 40 injured. Forty-four minutes into the first half, trouble started. Referee Vishnu Chauhan deemed Mohun Bagan captain Okolie Odafa unfit to take further part in the game after the player charged at him and made threatening gestures. The fans had carried stones and bottles, and a few crackers as well. Mohun Bagan forward Syed Rahim Nabi was injured after one of the bricks thrown from the stands hit him on his face. As Nabi had to be hospitalized, the Bagan players left the field. The match had been called off after Bagan refused to field their players in the second half.
The situation at the over-one-lakh-capacity stadium was later brought under control, with the police forcing the spectators out of the stadium soon after.
The casualties included 20 police officers who were injured in the scuffle. Commissioner of Bidhannagar Police, Rajiv Kumar, was also injured and suffered cuts in his cheek. Three people were detained in connection with the incident.
