Union Health Minister and director of AIIMS have stipulated that a vaccine is likely to be ready by early 2021, but it depends on various factors. On Oct 2, 2020, Dr Randeep Guleria, the director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said that the vaccine for the coronavirus could be expected in India by January 2021 if all goes as per the plan.

Speaking during a session of the India Today Healthgiri Awards 2020, Guleria admitted that it is difficult to say when a vaccine will be available in the country and that it depends on a lot of factors from the ongoing trials to the effectiveness of the vaccine against Covid-19 infections. If all things go as planned, the vaccine could be available in the market by early 2021.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said the first COVID-19 vaccine is likely to be available in India in the first quarter of 2021. Currently, there are three vaccine candidates in different stages of clinical trials in the country. These include the vaccine candidates being developed by Zydus Cadila, Bharat Biotech, and the Serum Institute of India (SII).
