Millions of migrant workers from Bihar were left jobless due to an unplanned lockdown in March 2020.

However,15,00,612 migrant workers had returned to Bihar.The Union Ministry of Labour and Employment, informed the Parliament during the Monsoon Session on September 14, 2020, that no data has been maintained by the government on the number of migrant workers who had lost their jobs due to the lockdown imposed on March 25 to curb the spread of the coronavirus, when asked whether the government had carried out an assessment of job losses of migrant workers as well as if it was aware of workers who died on their way back to their home States during the lockdown.

However, Labour Minister Santosh Gangwar presented the data on the number of migrant workers who returned to their home states during the lockdown. A total of 1,04,66,152 workers had returned, with 32,49,638 returning to Uttar Pradesh and 15,00,612 returning to Bihar.
