India Meteorological Department has declared Red alert at the Coastal and North interior Tamil Nadu on Nov. 25, 2020. Most of the places in Tamil Nadu are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Few isolated areas are likely to be hit by Cyclone Nivar. The cyclone would hit the state in the evening on Nov. 25 with a wind speed of 100 to 110 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph. The severe storm would make landfall between Karaikal and Mamallapuram around Puducherry in the late evening on the same day.
The depression over southwest Bay and southeast Bengal on Nov. 23 intensified to a deep depression over southwest Bay of Bengal and further formed Cyclone Nivar. It crossed South Coastal Andra Pradesh on Nov.24, causing rainfall at a few places.
The government deployed 12 teams of NDRF in Tamil Nadu, working in close coordination with the district and local administration.
