Immigrants from Germany who moved to the U.S brought Hamburg beef and cooked it as a steak which over time became commonly known as Hamburger. In the mid-19th century, immigrants moving from Germany to the United States who travelled via sea from the Hamburg port in Germany had brought along some of their favourite foods. For one such food, these people used to add regional spices to the shredded beef and cooked it which later became a regular meal amongst the poorer class of immigrants from Germany. This practice of cooking shredded beef underwent transitions over the years and was called the Hamburg steak. The initial idea of using shredded beef was believed to have been learnt by the sailors who frequented the Baltic region of Russia. The first known appearance of name hamburgers in the United States was in the year 1904 during the St. Louis Lousiana purchase exposition. The hamburger has since then become one of the favourite foods in the U.S. Meanwhile in Germany, the Hamburg steak is no longer known with that name as it is now known as 'Frikandelle' or 'Bulette'.
