Although Modi's government has announced 15 AIIMS centers, the projects are still in the developmental phase.
The first AIIMS was set up in 1956 in Delhi, and then in 2003, 6 new AIIMS centers under the PMSSY scheme were sanctioned during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure. However, the NDA government collapsed, and the project was in limbo. Subsequently, the UPA government came to power, and the six AIIMS planned in the first phase became functional.
The Modi government has announced 15 AIIMS centers since it came to power in 2014, and the work is still going on, which is at various stages of completion. It is expected that all the centers will become fully functional by 2025. The status update shows that some services have already started in 16 AIIMS centers.
