A rape victim in Kerala committed suicide after allegedly being raped by a CPI(M) activist.

Manu Manoj, who has been accused of sexually assaulting the Dalit girl, was a DYFI member and did not hold any party positions.

Manu Manoj, who has been accused of sexually assaulting the Dalit girl, was a DYFI member and did not hold any party positions. A 16-year-old Dalit girl died by suicide on Oct. 30, 2020, by setting herself on fire after being sexually abused by a Democratic Youth Federation of India member. The girl was admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram medical college hospital, where she battled for life for a week. The girl had suffered 40 percent burns.

A 24-year-old accused DYFI worker, identified as Manu Manoj, was an auto driver. Officials of the DYFI in the Idukki district confirmed that he was not a local leader nor held any positions. He just had membership in DYFI, the youth wing of the CPM, and was ousted as soon as the case surfaced.

The girl's family had filed a complaint with the police on Oct. 29, 2020, alleging that Manoj had sexually assaulted the girl after falsely promising to be in a relationship with her. Police said the accused had absconded after the incident but was arrested on Oct 31, 2020.

Since the accused was a CPM youth wing member and did not hold any party positions, the claim cannot be termed as true.
