Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced that the dragon fruit would be renamed 'Kamalam,' the Sanskrit name for lotus. On Jan. 20, 2021, Rupani announced that as the fruit's outer shape is like a lotus, the name 'Kamalam' suited the fruit. Further, he added that the state government had applied for the patent for renaming the fruit imported from South America, which is now grown in several states in India. It is cultivated in Kutch, Navsari, and different parts of Saurashtra in Gujarat.
