Jawaharlal Nehru believed that public servants should not associate themselves with faith or places of worship, and hence opposed his visit. The former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru opposed former President Rajendra Prasad's visit to the Somnath Temple in 1951 in Gujarat. When the former Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel visited the Somnath temple in 1947, he decided to renovate the Somnath Temple and handed over the responsibility to his colleague KM Munshi. After the reconstruction was complete, KM Munshi invited then President Dr. Rajendra Prasad to the inauguration of the Somnath temple. But, Nehru opposed Rajendra Prasad's visit in a letter by expressing that public servants should never associate themselves with faith or places of worship. In response, Dr. Rajendra Prasad said that all religions should be given an equal and respectful status. This exchange is recorded in a book called India After Gandhi.
