A press release by the Kashmir Police confirms that a Srinagar man circulating fake news on social media was arrested.The Kashmir Police press release dated 22 February 2020 states that a man was arrested and an FIR was registered in Srinagar for posting a threatening message on Facebook against a senior police officer.

The India Today article, citing the Indo Asian News Service (IANS), has stated that the person from Handwara in north Kashmir was arrested for misusing VPN by spreading fake images on social media and trying to malign the image of security forces. He was identified as Waseem Majeed Dar. Social media has been banned in Kashmir. However, many people have been reportedly accessing social media using VPN.

News website 'Kashmir In-depth' has also reported the same based on the press release.
