The UK government announced that it's imposing sanctions against 49 people and organizations accused of human rights violations and abuses. Under the UK's Global Human Rights Sanctions Regulations 2020, the country has imposed sanctions against 49 individuals and organizations. These sanctions are imposed against individuals and organizations rather than a nation. The sanctions aim to 'stop those involved in serious human rights abuses and violations from entering the country, channeling money through UK banks, or profiting from the UK's economy.' UK's Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, said that the sanctions imposed are the 'first wave of designations under the new regime, with further sanctions expected in the coming months.' Sanctions have been placed on people who were implicated in the death of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in 2009. Their UK assets will be frozen, and they would be banned from entering the country. Further, Saudi Arabian officials involved in the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi are also being targeted by the UK.
