Research published by the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene confirms that life-threatening parasite was found in Chinese patients.The report dated 30 July 2018, stated that Angiostrongyliasis, a food-borne parasite was found in two patients from EM region who had consumed raw centipedes. The infection was acquired through centipedes, that the patients had bought at a vegetable market. It also said that the centipede may act as a competent host for the transmission of infection.

South China Morning Post had published a related article which stated that a 78-year-old woman and her 46-year-old son, from Guangzhou, China, both had been suffering for weeks from headaches and drowsiness after they consumed the raw centipedes. After examining them, researchers in China traced a parasite called Angiostrongylus cantonensis in the two patients. It cited the research published in the Journal which said it could lead to paralysis and death.
