Before the pandemic, the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, which received about 1000 complaints per day, is now receiving 3000-4000 complaints.In a webinar hosted by the Aspen Institute held on April 16, 2020, Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) for the FBI Cyber Division, Tonya Ugoretz, said that since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a 300% increase in cybersecurity complaint (3000-4000 complaints per day). Further, she also stated that the hackers are from nationwide who took advantage of COVID-19-related research. A quick switch in telework among internet users resulted in a huge amount of cyber vulnerabilities. Moreover, as of March 30, 2020, the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reported that it had received and reviewed more than 1,200 complaints related to COVID-19 scams (Refer: Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The IC3's press releases also alerted other fraudulent activities during the COVID -19 crisis such as online extortion, fake shipping, and insurance fees by criminal actors and fraud schemes.
