The Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy to record all phone calls and monitor social media.

This Nigeran fake news refuted by its Ministry of communications was shared on social media in Assam and the Assam Police have also refuted it.

A viral post on social media, especially WhatsApp, across Assam claimed that the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy would be recording all phone calls and monitoring social media from 4 April 2020.

Upon research, it was found that a Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy does not exist in India. However, there is a Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy (FMCDE) in Nigeria and its Minister had clarified that there were no plans of monitoring or recording phone calls and social media activity of Nigerians according to an official Facebook post made on 24 February 2020.

The tweet made by the Assan Police on 3 April 2020 has also said that there was a fake WhatsApp message being circulated in the name of a nonexistent Ministry of Communications & Digital Economy and has also urged the people to not believe in such fake news and not to share it further.
