China is planning to build a major hydropower project in Tibet's part of the Brahmaputra River.

China's project will not impact quantity of Brahmaputra's flow to India, but raises concerns owing to it's proximity to Arunachal Pradesh.China has planned to build a significant hydropower project on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet, which flows through Tibet, India, and Bangladesh. This proposal has been put forward in the country's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) and its long-term goals through 2035 made by the Central Committee of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), which if approved, will be implemented from 2021.

Chinese media reported Yan Zhiyong, chairman of the Power Construction Corp of China, said that this hydropower project would maintain water resources and domestic security. "60 million kWh hydropower exploitation downstream of the Yarlung Zangbo River could provide 300 billion kWh of clean, renewable, and zero-carbon electricity annually," reports said. The hydropower station would reportedly generate 20 billion Yuan (USD three billion) annually for the Tibet Autonomous Region.

India has expressed concerns to China over the four dams on the upper and middle reaches, though Indian officials have said the dams are not likely to impact the quantity of the river’s flows in India greatly because they are only storing water for power generation, The Hindu reported. But if approved, a dam at the "Great Bend" —where the river falls over a 2,000 metre-drop and turns sharply to flow across the border into Arunachal Pradesh — would raise fresh concerns considering its location downstream and proximity to the Indian border.
