Scindia in a written reply to Baishnab Parida, Odisha's member of Rajyasabha on claiming that tea as national drink said that the Government of India has not yet declared tea its national drink.

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry's press release published by Press Information Bureau declares that the Government of India had received requests from the joint forum of Assam Tea Planters Association (ATPA), North Eastern Tea Association (NETA) and Bharatiya Cha Parishad (BCP) to declare tea as India's national drink.

According to the press release the requests were discussed in 2016 but not approved due to the objections raised from some of the other State Governments.
