The UN Working Group has termed the arrest of Safoora Zargar a violation of the multilateral treaty & asked India to compensate her as per the law.The Crime Branch of Delhi Police had filed an FIR related to Delhi communal riots case, against many students, including Zargar, for their alleged role in the violence. The Delhi Police claimed that Zargar was one of the riots' main conspirators in Northeast Delhi against the Citizenship Amendment Act and arrested her in April 2020. She had said that she was only part of protests and had refused the allegations. She got bail from the Delhi high court on humanitarian grounds because she was pregnant.

This case got the United Nations Working Group's attention, which made public its opinion on the arrest of Zargar. It said that it amounted to a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights treaty. India is one of the parties to the treaty. The panel said that she should be provided with compensation, and action against those who violated her rights should be initiated. Zargar's detention had no legal basis, the panel said.
