On December 14, 2020, Candice Lee, the Vice-Chancellor for Athletics and University Affairs and Athletics Director of Vanderbilt University, announced that Clark Lea would be the 29th head football coach at Vanderbilt.

The Vanderbilt Chancellor Daniel Diermeier and Candice Lee said Clark Lee would officially be introduced in the third week of December. Lea will replace Derek Mason, who served as the head coach from 2014 to November 29, 2020. Mason was fired by the university amid a winless season, having lost all eight of its game.
