Mid-ocean ridges contain a continuous range of underwater volcanoes, stretching nearly 65,000 kilometers with more than 90 percent of the mountain range lying in the deep ocean. In the ocean, volcanoes erupt along the cracks that are opened on the ocean floor by the spreading of plates and it is the most volcanically active feature on Earth. About 80 to 90 percent of all volcanic eruptions occur underwater where the plates spread apart and the volcanoes making up the ocean ridges are long and narrow.
