The family of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of independent India, had Islamic lineage.

There is no evidence to show that the family of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of independent India, had Islamic lineage.

There is no evidence to show that the family of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of independent India, had Islamic lineage.A post circulating on social media claims that independent India's first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru's family had an Islamic lineage. The claim is attributed to the biography of M.O. Mathai, Nehru's Special Assistant, between 1946 and 1959. Mathai had written two books: "Reminiscences of the Nehru Age" (published in 1978) and "My Days with Nehru" (published in 1979).

The post states that Nehru's actual parents were Mubarak Ali and Thussu Rahman Bai, and his grandfather also had a Muslim name, Ghiyasuddin, who later changed it to Gangadhar Nehru. However, these claims are baseless as none of these names are mentioned in Mathai's book.

According to the data on the official website of the Indian National Congress, "Jawaharlal Nehru was born to Motilal and Swarup Rani Thussu in 1889". The website has no mention of the Mubarak Ali or Rahman Bai. Moreover, the above two names have not been mentioned in Mathai's books as claimed in the post. Nor did the writer mention that his family had an Islamic lineage.

Nehru's autobiography published on the website 'Indian culture,' run by the government of India, clearly states that Nehru's grandfather was Ganga Dhar Nehru, and his great grandfather was Lakshmi Narayan Nehru.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, in 2015, "certain malicious (edits) were made to Jawaharlal Nehru's Wikipedia page from an IP address that belonged to the state-run National Informatics Centre (NIC)."

The HT report states that changes made claimed that "Nehru's grandfather, Gangadhar Nehru, was a Muslim, and that Nehru was born in a red-light area of Allahabad ."However, the website's revision history page' provides no references for the inserted information".

We mark it as false because there is no basis for the claim and no proof to support it.
