The players agreed to waive four months' salary due to the pandemic. The deal came in the wake of the coronavirus, which has led to leading clubs around Europe slash wage bills because of matches being postponed or played behind closed doors. Sports journalist Mr Gabriele Marcotti stated that the decision to reduce wages was not taken unilaterally, and was taken after several weeks of negotiations with players and senior leadership. Cristiano Ronaldo agreed to a pay cut of €3.8m from his yearly wage.
