Rajkumari Amrit Kaur was a key visionary in the construction of AIIMS, built-in 1956.The constructional design of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) in India was initiated by then Prime Minister Jawarharlal Nehru after the independence to build a center of excellence in the medical sciences. The project was extensively supported by his Health Minister, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur.

The health survey and the recommendations conveyed by the Bhore committee had managed to get generous grants from New Zealand that made it possible to lay the foundation of AIIMS in 1952.

The vision to build a scientific culture in the country proposed by Nehru and Amrit Kaur was converged to create AIIMS in 1956 for nurturing excellence in all aspects of health care.
