Covishield and Covaxin's effectiveness reduces against the Delta variant of COVID-19.

There is no strong clinical evidence suggesting the reduction in the effectiveness of Covishield or Covaxin on the COVID-19's delta variant.

There is no strong clinical evidence suggesting the reduction in the effectiveness of Covishield or Covaxin on the COVID-19's delta variant.Delta variant scientifically termed as B.1.617.2 of the COVID-19 infections was first detected in India in October 2020. It is reported that the delta strain was responsible for the second wave in India, which triggered a tsunami of COVID-19 cases through April. WHO has categorized the Delta variant as a variant of concern (VOC).

Amid this, two separate studies conducted recently by AIIMS and NCDC claimed that the Delta variant of COVID-19 could infect people even if they are vaccinated with Covishield and Covaxin. The studies found that more than 60 percent of COVID-19 infected patients had received the jab either single or double dose. The studies also indicated that the alpha variant offers resistance to both vaccines.

However, both the studies are not peer-reviewed, and the data collected is insufficient as the study was conducted on a small group of infected people. Further, the studies contradict a joint study done by the National Institute of Virology in Pune, the ICMR, and Bharat Biotech which says that Covaxin offers good protection against both the 'delta' and 'beta' variants.

We mark the claim as unverifiable as there is no solid proof suggesting that the vaccines are ineffective against the delta variant of COVID-19.
