The Supreme Court closed the case against Italian marines after Italy agreed to pay a compensation of ₹10 crores to the fishermen. In 2012, two Indian fishermen returning from fishing were shot near Lakshadweep islands by two Italian marines on board the Italian ship Enrica Lexie. A special court in India took up the case, and the proceedings were stopped by the International Tribunal, which ordered the release of marines and asked Italy to compensate the fishermen.

The Supreme court took into account the ruling by the Tribunal and quashed the FIR's registered against the Italian Marines. Both the Central and Kerala government accepted the proposal of the court.

The fisherman families have also agreed to the compensation of four crores each, while the boat owner will receive two crores for damages.
