A cargo of 2750 tons of deadly Ammonium Nitrate stored in the warehouse has caused the Beirut explosion.

Lebanon's government has blamed the presence of 2750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored at Beirut port, for the huge blast.

Lebanon's government has blamed the presence of 2750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored at Beirut port, for the huge blast. The massive explosions at Beirut port have killed at least 160 people and injured thousands of residents. It is alleged that the blast's cause was the 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate that had been stored at the city's port since 2013.

According to a report by Reuters, an investigation had been held in January 2020. The investigation stated that warehouse number 12 had been unguarded. There was also a hole in its southern wall, and one of its doors had been damaged- which had indicated that the hazardous material had been at risk of being stolen. The report submitted by Prosecutor General Oweidat ordered the door to be fixed.

On June 4, based on those orders, state security had instructed port authorities to provide guards at warehouse 12, appoint a director for the warehouse and secure all the doors, and repair the hole in the southern wall.

The high-ranking security official had also stated that the, during the work, sparks from the welding had taken hold, and fire spread had set off the material to explode when the temperature exceeded 210 degrees.

However, there is no official confirmation from the government on what had caused this large cache of volatile explosive material to ignite.
