Edited image of Lady Gaga shared to claim she is supporting Trump for 2024 elections

Context

Discussions about potential winners have surged online as the 2024 U.S. presidential elections draw nearer. One particular screenshot, featuring an alleged post by American singer Lady Gaga endorsing Donald Trump for the 2024 elections, has been circulated on platforms like TikTok and Twitter. In the screenshot, Lady Gaga is seen smiling on a podium, seemingly engaged in a campaign for Trump. The image appears to be a screenshot of a supposed post by the singer on Truth Social, Trump's social media platform. The caption in the screenshot reads: "I am proud to announce my endorsement of Donald. J Trump for President of the United States! America is struggling and we need someone who knows what they're doing to help us back up. ReTruth to share!" 

A Twitter user tweeted the screenshot with the caption, "I'm so scared right now. Is this a sign of the apocalypse?" This tweet has over 367,000 views. The archive of the post can be accessed here.

In Fact

On reading comments on the posts, it became evident that Lady Gaga has long been a critic of Trump.

When verifying the image's authenticity, we found that it was originally posted on November 2, 2020, when Lady Gaga appeared on the same date at Joe Biden's drive-in election rally in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The photo was taken by Im Watson for AFP and published on Getty Images.

In the original image, Gaga is seen standing at the podium with a smile, and two hands are placed across the front side of the podium. The text on the podium reads, "Text United to 30330. Battle for the soul of the nation. Biden. Harris." However, in the modified image, while the background and pose of the popstar remain the same, the text on the podium has been altered to "Trump. 2024." 

We found multiple reports, including one from The Guardian dated November 3, 2020, which revealed Lady Gaga endorsed Joe Biden during the 2020 U.S. elections. 

The Guardian quoted her as saying, "Vote like your life depends on it, or vote like your children's lives depend on it because they do. Everybody, no matter how you identify, now is your chance to vote against Donald Trump, a man who believes his fame gives him the right to grab one of your daughters, sisters, mothers, or wives by any part of their bodies... Vote for Joe. He's a good person."

Reuters also posted the original video of the pop singer's speech on November 3, 2020, where she urged the crowd to vote for Biden.

We also looked for Lady Gaga's official account on Truth Social. However, we found that she has no account on the platform.

The Verdict

The image is from 2020, when Lady Gaga endorsed Joe Biden, not Donald Trump, at an election rally. The viral photo has been digitally altered, and a fake caption has been added.
