It has been made mandatory for all vehicles in India from February 15, 2021, and any vehicle not fitted with it will be charged double the toll at electronic toll plazas.

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, informed the Lok Sabha that the GPS-based toll collection system would be implemented within a year and that all the physical toll booths will be removed. The toll collection will only happen via GPS, and the money would be collected based on GPS imaging on vehicles.
