The Union Home Minister Amit Shah has declared that Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) is an integral and inseparable part of India. The Government of India removed some special provisions of Article 370 to take away Jammu and Kashmir's special status. It proposed a bifurcation of the state into two union territories, namely Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The bill was passed in both the houses of the Indian parliament. On August 6, 2019, speaking in the Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared that the PoK is part of Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral part of India. He also claimed that the Aksai Chin region of Ladakh, which was taken over by China in the war of 1962, was also an integral part of India. During the discussion, he replied to the leader of Congress party Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary that he would die to make Kashmir an integral part of the Union of India.
The decision to scrap Article 370 was received with widespread protests across the country, especially in the then state of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan raised the matter at the UNSC and claimed that it was an attempt by the Indian government to change the demographics and status quo in the region and sought the UN intervention. India, on the other hand, stood firm on the decision and reiterated that Article 370 was part of the Indian constitution, and the issue was strictly an internal matter of India. Finally, on October 31, 2019, the Indian government officially declared two new union territories. A new map of the two Union Territories was also released, which included both POK and Aksai Chin as part of the Indian regions.
