In the third week of October 2021, daily COVID-19 cases in the U.K. crossed 50,000 for the first time since July 2021.

Nearly 50,000 new cases of COVID-19 infections were recorded in October to reach the highest level since 17 July.

Nearly 50,000 new cases of COVID-19 infections were recorded in October to reach the highest level since 17 July. Many factors are attributed to the rising cases of coronaviruses in the U.K. A new variant of Delta named AY.4.2 has been spreading fast in the country. According to the latest government figures, the daily cases of COVID-19 surpassed 50,000 in a single day. It marked the largest daily rise since lockdown ended three months back in July. Government sources reportedly expect to see cases to the tune of 100,000 per day, even though it is not a sure thing. However, the rising number of cases is much slower as many people are vaccinated. The vaccines are found to be highly effective in preventing severe infections and deaths.

Experts cite various reasons for the sudden spike in the cases. The masking mandate is not strictly followed as pubs, restaurants, and nightclubs are reopened. U.K.’s early vaccination rollout is also a contributing factor as the immunity wanes after six months in the vaccinated people. Moreover, the hesitancy in vaccinating teenagers and reliance on the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is found to be less effective against the delta variant, are the other leading causes of infection spread.

The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to a lot of potentially dangerous misinformation. For reliable advice on COVID-19, including symptoms, prevention, and available treatment, please refer to the World Health Organization or your national healthcare authority.
