China's National Health Commission has announced that over one billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country.
China ramped up its vaccination campaign in late March 2021. Authorities said 1,010,489,000 shots have been given as of June 19, 2021, though it is unclear how much of the population is fully vaccinated.
The campaign drives accelerated the availability of free COVID-19 vaccinations nationwide. China has upped its vaccination drive by inoculating close to 9 million doses per day. The country aims to vaccinate 40 percent of its 1.4 billion population by July 2021.
Zeng Yixin, deputy head of the National Health Commission, argued that the campaign shows that Chinese COVID-19 vaccines are safe as incidence rates of common side effects and abnormal reactions of vaccines are below average compared to other countries' vaccines. At the current rate of vaccination, Mr. Zeng expects to inoculate 70 percent of the target population by the end of 2021.
