Mumbai DCP filed a defamation complaint over Arnab Goswami’s coverage of Sushant Singh’s death.

The complaint's copy published by Bar & Bench shows that Mumbai DCP filed a defamation case over Arnab Goswami’s coverage of Sushant's death.

The complaint's copy published by Bar & Bench shows that Mumbai DCP filed a defamation case over Arnab Goswami’s coverage of Sushant's death. On February 03, 2021, Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abhishek Trimukhe, sued Republic TV's editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami, his wife, and ARG Outlier Media, which runs the channel. The complaint seeks a "deterrent process of warrant" against the accused and compensation for the DCP. "The defamatory remarks have been made by a singular view of assassinating his (Trimukhe's) official character and thereby maliciously and deliberately causing undue humiliation of the Mumbai Police department and those who serve the public thereunder," the complaint states, reported LiveLaw.

Trimukhe's complaint alleges that Goswami made several defamatory statements about him during a panel discussion on Rhea Chakraborty's phone records connected to Sushant Singh Rajput's death. He further said that Goswami also telecasted malicious comments on his channel 'Republic Bharat', which was also published on their YouTube channel.

The 40-page complaint adds that Goswami, who has 188,200 followers on Twitter, published several malicious tweets and has essentially reiterated and re-circulated contents of the defamatory telecast widely on social media. It also stated that the tweets were without context and were circulated to damage Trimukhe's reputation and humiliated the Mumbai Police.

According to reports, the complainant also states, "one is bound to tolerate criticism, and as a public servant in a democratic country, one welcomes it. However, one is legally entitled not to tolerate defamatory attacks under the guise of criticism, aimed at destroying the reputation built by one over their lifetime".
