Mr. Hancock expressed that the country could go back to normal by Christmas if the mass testing regime is implemented successfully. The United Kingdom government has announced a £500 million worth of funding for rapid trials of COVID-19 tests, including recently developed swab and saliva tests that can be performed in 90 minutes or less. The community-wide testing pilot has been launched in Salford and existing pilots are expanded in Southampton and Hampshire.

The UK Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, has stated that the country would probably be able to get back to normal by December 2020 if a mass testing regime is ready in time.

He also added that social distancing rules could be lifted if the mass testing is successfully implemented while waiting for a vaccine.

It is not possible to speculate whether the mass testing regime would be implemented in the UK and whether it would be safe enough to ease the social distancing restriction in December.
