BBC reported the findings of Indian scientists linking the black fungus to cow urine.

A morphed screenshot of BBC's website is used to falsely claim that the outlet reported on black fungus linking with cow urine. As the pandemic rages and cases of a rare disease called black fungus are on the rise, some politicians have been recommending unscientific treatments, including cow urine, as a cure for COVID-19. BJP MP Pragya Thakur recently claimed that she drinks cow urine extract to protect herself from the disease. Further, a viral image of an alleged BBC article is circulating on social media linking cow urine with rising black fungus cases.

We found one article published by BBC on May 9 about black fungus written by Soutik Biswas. It did not mention anything about cow urine. Soutik Biswas also tweeted that the viral image is fake.

Further, we noticed formatting and grammatical errors in the viral screenshot by comparing it with the original article published on May 23. For example, in the original BBC article, the headline, byline, and dateline are all left-aligned, one under the other. In the case of the viral image, there is a small gap between the alignment of headline, byline, and dateline.

We mark the claim as false as a doctored image is being circulated on social media.
