"One small incident of rape in Delhi advertised all over the world is enough to cost us millions of dollars in tourism," late BJP leader Arjun Jaitley had once said.

Late Arun Jaitley had made the remark in 2014 while speaking to a gathering of state tourism ministers. He had issued a clarification later.

Late Arun Jaitley had made the remark in 2014 while speaking to a gathering of state tourism ministers. He had issued a clarification later. Former Finance Minister of India, late Arun Jaitley, had remarked while addressing the National Conference of State Tourism Ministers in New Delhi in 2014, "One small incident of rape in Delhi — advertised world over is enough to cost us billions of dollars in terms of lower tourism."

He was referring to the incident in December 2012 in which a 23-year-old physiotherapy student was assaulted on a moving bus by six men who gang-raped her and tortured her with an iron rod. The gangrape was condemned worldwide and had triggered widespread protests in India after the victim died.

Jaitley's comments were criticised and called insensitive and the parents of the victim also expressed shock over his comments. He later issued a clarification saying, "I regret that some word that I used was construed as insensitive, that was never my intention. I have been always been very outspoken about issues relating to crime against women. I am very sensitive to these issues myself."
