Biden has asked the Department of Justice to draft rules to limit the use of homemade or improvised firearms in the U.S. On April 8, President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland proposed measures to combat gun violence in the U.S. The White House has called the move a first step towards preventing mass shootings, violence in communities, and suicides. In the past, politicians had expressed openness to provisions, including tighter background checks, but efforts to reach bipartisan consensus on standard gun control measures have failed. Ghost guns are usually made from parts available online and do not have traceable serial numbers. The President asked the Department of Justice to draft rules that will lessen the proliferation of ghost guns. Biden said he wants kits and parts used to assemble guns to be treated as firearms where the components have serial numbers and are subject to a background check. Biden's actions are limited. Any attempt to limit access would almost certainly be challenged in court by gun rights proponents, who observe any restrictions as a breach of the Second Amendment. The reforms are in response to shootings in Georgia and Colorado, both of which took place in March 2021. According to NBC, the police said that a shooting at a Texas industrial park injured five and killed one person just hours after his announcement. Some of Biden's proposed actions, such as restrictions on arm braces, have already been met with opposition from the National Rifle Association.
