
Information by Mayor and News reports confirm that Russia is using surveillance camera for facial recognition of people to fight against COVID-19.
Reuters on 21 February 2020 quoting Sergei Sobyanin, the Mayor of Moscow said that the authorities are monitoring virus-infected people using facial recognition technology and prevent them from leaving their apartments. They were using the technology to catch any offenders ordered to remain at home or in hotels under coronavirus quarantine.
TASS on 18 March 2020 quoted Oleg Baranov, Moscow's police chief who said that surveillance cameras in Moscow are effective in monitoring citizens during the quarantine period. More than 200 citizens have been found to have committed violations. Further, he said that 178 thousand cameras were installed in Moscow that helps in facial recognition of the citizens.
