Boris Johnson told that exempting migrant frontline care workers from the NHS surcharge would cost £900M.

The estimate by the House of Commons Library confirms that it would cost only £35m a year to exempt all NHS staff from paying the surcharge.

The estimate by the House of Commons Library confirms that it would cost only £35m a year to exempt all NHS staff from paying the surcharge.Boris Johnson had said that contributions from NHS care workers from abroad help them to rise over £900 million and if migrant frontline care workers surcharge was exempted, it would be very difficult in the current situation to find alternative sources.

The research briefing document showed the amount collected every year since 2015 by all migrants was close to £900 million. Whereas it is reported that the House of Commons Library had estimated that £917 million was raised as surcharge over four years from all international migrants, not just the amount paid by healthcare workers themselves. The library had also estimated it would cost about £35m a year to exempt all NHS staff from the surcharge amount.

However, the data behind the figure is confidential and can only be obtained by the MP's. The figure was corroborated by an extract obtained from the library and tweeted by Seema Malhotra, Labour MP.
