The words 'state Negrophobia' were sprayed at the bottom of the statue. A group called the Anti-Negrophobia Brigade posted photos online of the graffiti.

Jean-Baptiste Colbert helped write the Code Noir or Black Code in the 17th Century, which defined slavery and race in France's colonial empire.

The incident comes in the wake of the murder of George Floyd by US police in Minneapolis, which led to a wave of protests across the world against police brutality and institutional racism.
