Anand Bazar Patrika reported that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said almost 99% of South Bengal has been destroyed by cyclone Amphan.On May 21, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was quoted as saying that almost 99% of South Bengal has been destroyed by cyclone Amphan. The cyclone, which made landfall in Bengal on May 20 has killed 86 people in the state and left a trail of destruction in its wake. South 24 Parganas is the worst-hit district where the super cyclone has damaged thousands of houses, inundated low-lying areas, destroyed crops and uprooted 5,000 trees in Kolkata alone. The ecologically-sensitive Sunderban delta which also lies in south Bengal and is the state's first line of defence against the cyclones arising in the Bay of Bengal, has also been ruinously impacted. More than 5 lakh people in the state were evacuated by the National Disaster Response Force.
