Periyar E. V. Ramasamy received the UNESCO award.

Periyar E.V.Ramasamy received the UNESCO Mandram award in 1970 but not the actual UNESCO award.

Periyar E.V.Ramasamy received the UNESCO Mandram award in 1970 but not the actual UNESCO award. The UNESCO Forum - UNESCO Mandram headed by DMK General Secretary K. Anpalagan presented the award to Periyar in a ceremony held at the Rajaji Mandapam in Chennai on June 27, 1970. He was presented with a shield engraved with the words 'Socrates, Southeast Asia', on behalf of UNESCO. The organization that presented an award to Periyar was actually called ‘UNESCO MANDRAM’, clearly this organization is not UNESCO as claimed by several DMK members and fans of E V Ramasamy. This organization is one of those many that follow the ideals of UNESCO.
