The research reports released by the University at Buffalo and Oxford University Press (OUP) supports the claim. The research report released by the OUP Academic states that Wrangel Island mammoths have undergone harmful mutations which have caused behavioural, developmental deformities leading to a small population and reduced genetic diversity. It also states that the mammoths had defects in oligozoospermia, reduced male fertility and the ability to detect floral scents.

A study by the University at Buffalo mentions that four thousand years ago, the last woolly mammoths had died in Wrangel Island, a remote Arctic refuge off the coast of Siberia. Also mentions that the variety of genetic defects have hindered their development, reproduction and their ability to smell.
