But the motive behind the murder is unclear.The Chairman of Dumdum municipality, Dr. Sailen Das, was shot dead on August 13, 2001, which had sent shockwaves in West Bengal. The police investigation found that the murder was a conspiracy hatched by a real estate promoter Sudhir Bhattacharya who had been expelled from CPM for anti-party activities. He had hired P.S. Kamat, a secretary of a film star fan club, to eliminate Das.

The Telegraph reported that police during the course of the investigation learned about an illegal deal from the Das family. During his tenure as civic chairman, Bhattacharya had sanctioned an illegal plan to build a four-storeyed apartment block based on forged documents. Das had tried to stop the construction, which led to the murder.

However, there is no official comment from the authorities as to why Mr. Das was murdered. There are concrete pieces of evidence to show that the lake's issue led to murder at the current time. Thus, we cannot objectively verify the reason behind the murder of Sailen Das.
