The Open Society Foundations also funds The Poynter Institute of media studies, established in 1975. Poynter is a non-profit journalism school and research organization based in Florida. The school is owned by the Tampa Bay Times newspaper, the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), and operates PolitiFact.

Open Society Foundations is one of the listed funders on Poynter's website, among several others. It contributed more than $50,000 in 2019- 2020, according to the website.
