The UPA government proposed a new Parliament building in 2012, but it was never implemented, nor was the cost estimated for the project. Some social media posts claim that the UPA government launched the new parliament building project in 2012 at the cost of ₹3,000 crores, while the NDA government has planned to complete the project in just ₹970 crores.

Meira Kumar, the House Speaker, approved the proposal to construct a new parliament building in 2012, citing the structure's signs of distress and overuse. However, the project did not begin, and only deliberations on the subject took place.

According to The Journal of Parliamentary Information, Meira Kumar and Sumitra Mahajan (Former Spokesperson for the Lok Sabha) agreed to the new parliament building proposal. However, there is no mention of the estimated cost for construction to have been ₹3,000 crores. Furthermore, Meira Kumar's concept did not receive enough support, and only deliberations took place on the topic. The UPA government did not initiate the project but merely consulted on its construction.

The current Central Vista project is a ₹20,000 crore project that includes constructing a new triangular Parliament building, a joint central secretariat, and new buildings for the Prime Minister and Vice-President. In that, the new parliament building is estimated to cost ₹971 crores.
